Introducing U-10K…

U-10K The Nashville Urban 10K — is a Memorial Day Weekend 10K run/walk on Saturday, May 24, 2008 in downtown Nashville to benefit the Nashville Civic Design Center. The Nashville Civic Design Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to elevating the quality of Nashville's built environment and promoting public participation in the creation of a more beautiful and functional city for all.

U-10K promises a memorable race route past downtown Nashville's historic and cultural sites and newest architectural icons with its start and finish at the Public Square Park in front of the historic Metro Courthouse. It will heighten community awareness of downtown’s many facets, including its architecture, visual arts, music, history and Nashville's fastest growing residential neighborhood.

U-10K is a holiday weekend event for all members of the community. Awards will be given for the top finishing racers in each category. Special discounts will be given to registration for families.

U-10K is managed by and the course is certified by The Nashville Striders, Middle Tennessee's largest running club, and is expected to draw approximately 400 participants this year. A comprehensive promotional plan for the race has been designed and developed to grow each year, including sponsorship by THE TENNESSEAN and Lightning 100’s Team Green. U-10K is anticipated to become a must-do event in downtown Nashville.

Why support U-10K and the Nashville Civic Design Center?

The Nashville Civic Design Center has a distinct impact on the quality of life in downtown Nashville. The nonprofit organization — www.civicdesigncenter.org — is dedicated to elevating the quality of Nashville's built environment and promoting public participation in the creation of a more beautiful and functional city for all.

The Civic Design Center helps increase understanding of civic design issues through education and public forums. It also works with the public and private sectors on civic projects and other development affecting downtown and its surrounding neighborhoods. The Center's most far-reaching project to date has been the community-based vision plan, The Plan of Nashville.

The plan is the result of a process that involved more than 800 Nashvillians. Joining in a series of 47 community workshops, citizens voiced their opinions about how they wanted their city to look and function and suggested opportunities for improving the quality of life in Nashville. Their ideas were incorporated into ten principles to guide decision-making and development over the next fifty years. In January 2005, Vanderbilt University Press published The Plan of Nashville: Avenues to a Great City, (www.planofnashville.com) written by Christine Kreyling, which documents the vision and the process that produced it.
