SUMMARY:A VISION FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT\: The Beaver Creek Watershed Green Infrastructure Plan
DESCRIPTION:\nThis Urban Design Forum will consist of a presentation by Professors Mark DeKay and Tracy Moir-McClean from the University of Tennessee School of Architecture’s Green Vision Studio. The presentation will be followed by a discussion\, in conjunction with the professors&#39\; concurrent exhibit at the Civic Design Center.\nThe Knoxville area plan was initiated by the driving issues of increased flooding\, poor water quality\, the State 303d listing of polluted streams\, and conservation easements\, with the related issues of sprawl\, open space loss\, habitat fragmentation\, and degrading rural character. We in Middle Tennessee face similar issues\, and we can learn from Knoxville&#39\;s experiences. As a new paradigm\, the project argues that the watershed’s development does not have to result in undifferentiated sprawl. It can be planned and managed to help it mature into a place where…\n* life feels like living in a traditional small town.\n* amenities of town living are just steps away from recreational opportunities and green parks.\n* children don’t need mini-vans to reach soccer practice and scout meetings.\n* everyone can have clean air and water.\n* the county meets its legal environmental obligations.\n* property values are strong.\n* a relationship with nature is a daily event.\n* our important land heritage is honored.\n* businesses prosper from clustering and higher pedestrian traffic.\n* settlement and land form an integrated whole.\n
