THE PLAN OF NASHVILLE

Visionary Transit Designs by University of Tennessee Graphic Design Students

In the Fall of 2002, the Nashville Civic Design Center began work on The Plan of Nashville, with the goal of creating a vision plan to guide Nashville’s development for the next fifty years. As a part of that process, the NCDC contacted Deborah Shmerler, a graphic design professor at the University of Tennessee, with a graphic design proposal to create conceptual designs for Nashville’s future public transportation system. The scope included designing a conceptual name, logo, and route map for the theoretical system. The Junior Design studio undertook the project during the spring semester of 2004. The design proposals support The Plan of Nashville’s mission toward sustainability of the urban environment. In addition, the complex nature of the projects provided a meaningful learning experience for the students.

In January of 2005, the designs for Nashville’s Future Public Transit System were featured as an exhibition at the Civic Design Center’s Urban gallery.
