Beyond Checking the Box: Community Engagement for Impact

Beyond Checking the Box: Community Engagement for Impact

Designers, developers and policy-makers all bring expertise to the table, but community members are the experts in their lived experience; therefore it is important to tap the knowledge and priorities of the residents we are designing for. Designers are often tasked with “engaging the community” without a clear picture of what that means, why it matters, and how to do it effectively and authentically. What do we mean by community outreach, participatory design, co-creation or community organizing? How does these engagement techniques empower residents with agency and shape a project outcome? The panel will discuss the role and responsibility of designers to understand the relationship between process and product and share their experiences of how engaging community can help build capacity, incubate social connections, encourage leaders and allow for community authorship.
