JEFFERSON STREET STILL STANDS

A Poem By Poet Williams, Community Ambassador to the Jefferson Street Corridor Study.

You can still hear it… The echoes of feet HITTING THE PAVEMENT. You can still hear it… The sound of music MOVING THE SOUL. The laughter. The fellowship. The families gathering, time and time again. Where strangers became neighbors, where neighbors became family, and where relationships were forged that would last beyond a lifetime. JEFFERSON STREET. A street with a heartbeat. A street with a history. A street with a soul that refuses to be silenced. Strong. Resilient. Still overcoming. Because this street has endured what seemed like years of attacks on the very thing that gave it life. And then came I-40. An interstate that did more than cut through a neighborhood. It cut through front yards. It cut through communities. It separated neighbors. It disrupted livelihoods. It tore through a vibrant neighborhood and left behind wounds that time alone could not heal. And yet… JEFFERSON STREET STILL STANDS. And that means something. Because when you’ve watched change take something from you, when you’ve witnessed progress become somebody else’s excuse to displace your people… Change doesn’t always sound like opportunity. Sometimes, change sounds like a warning. Sometimes, change looks like a promise that was never meant for you. And sometimes, when you’ve experienced trauma, you learn to question every hand that reaches out to help. Because you’re wondering… Is this really change? Or is gentrification wearing a different disguise? But we made a commitment. A commitment to show this community that change doesn’t have to happen TO you. Change can happen WITH you. And more importantly, change can happen BECAUSE OF YOU. That is why the Jefferson Street Corridor Study means so much more than a plan on paper. It is more than lines on a map. More than concepts in a presentation. More than meetings, more than surveys, more than words spoken behind the doors of government. It is about PEOPLE. The people who live here. The people who work here. The people who own businesses here. The people who shop here. The people who grew up on this street, and the people who travel from near and far because something about Jefferson Street continues to call them home. And we made it our mission to make sure they knew: YOU BELONG IN THIS CONVERSATION. Your voice matters. Your concerns matter. Your memories matter. Your future matters. Because you should never have to discover what’s happening to your community after the decisions have already been made. You should never have to stand on the outside looking in at the future of a place you helped build. And you should never have to wonder whether anybody in power even knows your name. So we showed up. We reached out. We built relationships with anyone and everyone who had a connection to Jefferson Street. We listened to the concerns. We made room for the questions. We acknowledged the fears. Because building trust means understanding that trust cannot simply be demanded. IT HAS TO BE EARNED. And slowly, conversation began to bridge a gap that had existed far too long… The gap between community and governance. Between the people and the process. Between those who live with the consequences and those who help shape the decisions. And today, we stand proud. Proud of this study. Proud of this work. Proud of every person who took the time to speak, to listen, to question, to challenge, and to imagine something better. And proud of ourselves for understanding that the work was never just about a corridor. It was about restoring something that should never have been lost: THE COMMUNITY’S PLACE AT THE TABLE. Now, let me be clear… We know one study cannot erase generations of pain. One conversation cannot repair every broken connection. And one plan cannot guarantee that every fear will disappear. But what we can do is lay a foundation. A foundation built on transparency. Built on accountability. Built on relationships. Built on the understanding that the people who call this place home must have a hand in shaping its future. Because progress should not require the disappearance of the people who gave a place its identity. And revitalization should never mean erasing the very history that made a place worth revitalizing. JEFFERSON STREET DESERVES BOTH. It deserves to honor what it was while embracing what it can become. It deserves to celebrate its history without being imprisoned by its past. It deserves a future where opportunity and community can exist side by side. And years from now, when the music is still moving souls, when families are still gathering, when businesses are still opening their doors, and when another generation walks these same streets… May they remember this moment. May they remember that change did not have to be something that happened to them. May they remember the people who showed up, the voices that spoke up, and the community that refused to be left out of its own future. Because Jefferson Street is more than a road. It is memory. It is culture. It is resilience. It is a legacy still being written. And if history has taught us anything, it is this: You can divide a neighborhood. You can disrupt a community. You can change the landscape. But you cannot easily silence a people who know who they are and understand what they deserve. So let the record show… We remembered the past. We faced the fear. We made room for the voices that needed to be heard. And together, we began to write a new chapter. Not a chapter written FOR the community without its consent… But a chapter written WITH the community, with its voices, with its vision, and with its future in mind. And when the story of this corridor is told for generations to come, let it never be said that the community was absent. Let it never be said that nobody listened. Let it never be said that Jefferson Street was forgotten. Because through every challenge, through every struggle, through every attempt to change its course… JEFFERSON STREET STILL STANDS. And as long as its people continue to have a voice, a seat at the table, and a hand in shaping tomorrow… JEFFERSON STREET WILL CONTINUE TO STAND. Strong. Resilient. Together. JEFFERSON STREET… STILL STANDING.
