We want you to design the future of 2nd Ave

One of the Civic Design Center’s Guiding Principles is to celebrate the streets as principal public space for community and connectivity. Streets are the largest amount of public space that cities have (even compared to parks and open space). As part of the Design Center’s work with the Metro Planning Department on helping to envision the future of 2nd Ave N, this project seeks your input to design one of our community's most beloved streets.

Reestablish the streets as the principal public space of community and connectivity.
— Ten Principles of The Plan of Nashville

StreetMix is a tool that makes it easy for people to design public spaces together. The Civic Design Center is looking for you to use this web-based program to design what you think is an ideal street section for 2nd Ave N. This is a way to see what priorities people have regarding the future of the street.

It’s a streetfight everywhere... but if you can change the street, you can change the world.
— Janette Sadik-Khan, former NYC DOT Commissioner

Things to consider when designing your street section:

On average, 2nd Ave N is about 72 feet wide from each outside edge of the sidewalks. When designing the street section, the width is given and basically cannot be changed. The Civic Design Center wants to see what types of street programming are most desired by our community. This will help prioritize how to best advocate for the public right-of-way.

  • What types of activities would be exciting or useful to have on 2nd?

  • What would be conducive to a vibrant streetscape?

  • What would be ideal at different times of the year (summer, winter, etc)

  • Who do you see as the primary user of the street?

  • who might have issues with your design?
