Connecting and Visioning Public Spaces

The primary goal is to create a vision and community-centered plan for the Looby Park and Community Center, including the surrounding community assets, including schools and parks (exact project scope to be determined). This is a key focus because the community center and area are in need for thoughtful and careful planning as the area continues to experience changes and development. This project will consider not only the community voices, but will also envision and plan for an enhanced area in the Buena Vista, Metrocenter, and surrounding neighborhoods.

This project supports our Guiding Principles for Park and Greenway Systems, Neighborhood Identity, and Community Involvement. Check out the Guiding Principles to learn more about our goals.

Project Context

Zephaniah Alexander Looby

was a lawyer in Nashville who was active during the Civil Rights Movement as well as a member of the City Council. He immigrated to the US from the British West Indies at 15 and earned degrees from Howard University, Columbia University Law School, and New York University.

He moved to Nashville to start his own practice, teach at Fisk and helped found the Kent College of Law. In 1976 a new community center and library were named in his honor.
